Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?

Gas pumps in a row

When pumping regular gas, you may have noticed a button that reads “Premium” and wondered, what is the difference between premium and regular gas? You are not alone. It is a common question asked by Greensboro drivers. At Athens BMW, we compare premium vs. regular gas so you can better understand their differences. Contact our service department for more information.

What is Premium Gasoline?

Premium gas differs from regular gas due to its octane level. Most premium gas has an octane level of 90 or above and helps keep your engine cleaner. Premium gas is often better for the environment and has less pollution.

What is Regular Unleaded Gasoline?

Although premium and regular gas are similar in many ways, they are also very different. Regular unleaded gasoline is most likely what you use in your car to drive Jefferson roads. However, Its octane level is 87, which is what indicates how well it resists fuel combustion. Regular unleaded gas is better for your health and the environment than gas containing lead.

The Similarities Between Premium vs. Regular Gas

Premium gas and regular gas do share some similarities, and they are:

  • Both are produced by crude oil.
  • Both are Combustible
  • Both are better for your health and environment than lead gas

The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

Here are the differences when comparing premium vs. regular gas

  • Octane Rating: Your engine is less likely to incur engine knocking, also known as pre-ignition. Engine knocking can damage your vehicle. However, it is less common to occur when using premium gas.
  • Engine Suitability: Regular unleaded gas is most suitable for vehicles with engines that have low compression ratios. Regular gas burns faster than premium gas, but premium gas is only ideal for high compression ratio engines.
  • Price: Premium gas is more expensive than regular gas, typically 20 to 40 cents more costly per gallon.

When to Use Premium or Regular Gas

Regular gas is the most commonly used gas. With that said, before you make a switch from regular gasoline to premium or vice versa, here are some following tips to keep in mind:

  • What gasoline does your owner’s manual recommend?
  • If your car does not need premium gas to run, using it will not increase vehicle performance or extend the lifespan of your car.
  • If your owner’s manual states to use premium gas, you can use regular gas periodically. If you hear engine knocking, then it is best to switch back to premium.
  • If your car, truck, or SUV has a turbocharger, you will likely need to use premium gas.
