Frequently-Asked Electric Car Service Questions

2022 BMW i4 on highway

Here at Athens BMW, we pride ourselves on offering the very best electric car service for Watkinsville drivers. As one of the top electric car servicemen in the greater Jefferson area, we often field a lot of questions about BMW EVs, how they function, and the OEM parts they rely on to work properly. Do electric cars need oil? Do electric cars have a transmission? Find out the answers to these questions, and more, with our certified service technicians below!

  1. Do Electric Cars Last Longer than Gas Cars?

  2. Gas-powered vehicles have their advantages. Their parts are easier to replace over time, and gas-powered vehicles can travel further around Greensboro on a single fill-up. EVs, on the other hand, can last longer with fewer maintenance appointments. That’s not to say that electric cars don’t require regular repairs. Nevertheless, the lack of moving parts within an electric vehicle greatly improves its longevity.

  3. Do Electric Cars Have Heaters/Air Conditioning?

  4. They sure do! Electric cars rely on electricity stored in the batteries to run the heating and cooling systems. You’ll want to keep in mind that the design and efficiency of those systems is critical to the overall driving range of the EV.

  5. Do Electric Cars Have a Transmission?

  6. Electric cars do have a transmission, but they don’t have multiple speeds. Internal combustion engines need several gears with varying gear ratios to output power. Electric motors produce the same amount of torque regardless of RPM within a specific range. Generating torque via revving isn’t necessary with electric motors either, because EVs produce power instantaneously. The gear ratios are carefully integrated and precalculated, so you don’t have to worry about changing gears.

  7. Do Electric Cars Have Horsepower?

  8. Yes, electric cars do have the horsepower. However, many automobile manufacturers will refer to the measurement of power in their EVs as “KW.” There’s not much of a difference between the two.

  9. Do Electric Cars Need Oil?

No, EVs don’t require oil changes. Electric vehicles don’t need oil changes because they don’t have traditional gasoline-powered combustion engines. The purpose of oil is to lubricate the moving components of an engine. If there’s no engine to speak of, there are no moving components for the motor oil to lubricate. However, hybrid vehicles run on an electric battery and a combustion engine, so you’ll need regular oil changes for hybrid models.
