5 Steps to Preparing for an Electric Vehicle Home Charger

When you buy a new car, most people in Watkinsville don’t think they have to prepare their home for it. And while electric vehicles have many benefits including zero tailpipe emissions and lower maintenance costs than a gasoline car, you’ll still need an electric vehicle home charger outfitted in your garage to charge it at home. Electric vehicle charging stations are in your local area, but you’ll likely want to charge it at home too, which requires you to prepare your garage for an electric car. Here are five easy steps on how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle.

1. Decide on a Charging Type (AKA Charging Level)

There are two home car charging systems you can pick for your home. They’re called Level 1 and Level 2 and this is the difference between the two:

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes days to get a full charge.
  • Level 2 EV charging often takes several hours to get a full charge. You can get between 60-200 miles of range in 20 to 30 minutes with Level 2 charging. Most EV drivers in Jefferson mix daytime charging with overnight charging with this charging system.

2. Ready Your Garage

You’ll want to get your garage cleaned out first. Clean out the clutter if your garage has been used as a storage space.

3. Find Your Power Panel & Assess Consumption

The power panel in your Greensboro home distributes electricity in your building. It’ll have a maximum current flow measured in amperes. Most new homes will have a 100 amp power panel, but there should be an amperage rating printed on your main circuit breaker. You’ll also want to perform a self-assessment of your electricity use so you don’t overload the electric distribution panel.

4. Hire an Electrician

You’ll want to hire an electrician next. This is the person to discuss concerns about power consumption with. They’ll install a 240-volt plug or add a hardwired circuit back to the power panel. This will typically cost a few hundred dollars, but it could be more if your power panel needs to be upgraded.

5. Buy Your Charger & Have it Installed

If you haven’t already gotten your EV charger at this point, this is the time to do so. You’ll want it professionally installed by your electrician.
